2020 Fitness Trends

Fitness fads come and go, sometimes as quickly as the latest fashion or pop music. You may recall when fitness-based video games or vibrating dumbbells motivated people to get off their couches and into a workout. Now in 2020, a new crop of fitness fads is thriving – like goat yoga, with baby goats frolicking about while you shift into poses.

But fitness fads don’t last long, which can threaten your commitment to exercising. “The biggest problem with exercise is staying with it. If you get bored with a fad or it disappears, you might become noncompliant,” says Walter Thompson, past president of the American College of Sports Medicine and an associate dean and professor of kinesiology and health at Georgia State University.

How can you avoid the fads and keep up with popular workouts? The answer, Thompson says, is following fitness trends – forms of exercise that

24 Hour Fitness bankruptcy: Which gyms are closing?

24 Hour Fitness Worldwide Inc. sought court protection from its creditors, unable to keep up with debt payments after the COVID-19 pandemic shut down gyms nationwide.

The company will permanently close about 130 gyms, including 18 locations around the Greater Los Angeles area and Orange County.

For the record:

California gyms reopening: Gov. Gavin Newsom says guidelines for reopening CA gyms, fitness centers coming in ‘week or so’

SAN FRANCISCO — When do gyms reopen in California and what will they look like when they do? Gov. Gavin Newsom held a roundtable discussion on Wednesday to talk about reopening the fitness industry amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The participants shared how they are dealing with the crisis, how they are adapting their workplaces, and what opportunities they see to reinvent their businesses and our state’s economy.

Newsom says he hopes that within a week or so, the state can release guidelines for reopening gyms. But he also points out that the fitness industry is multi-faceted and he doesn’t want to be naive and just put out something bland that doesn’t meet the unique criteria and considerations.

In the meantime, some gyms and instructors have been able to switch to virtual, one-on-one classes to make money. “We’re continuing to work our mission virtually,” one fitness industry member said.

Coronavirus rules for reopening California gyms coming soon

Gov. Gavin Newsom on Wednesday said his administration will release guidelines “in a week or so” for allowing gyms, yoga studios and other fitness facilities to reopen, though stringent safeguards will need to be adopted to protect customers from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Newsom cautioned that the state directives will be tailored to the unique characteristics of each business, from large fitness chains to small studios, and will rely heavily on the advice of public health officials in each county.

The governor made the comments during an online roundtable with fitness professionals and business owners Wednesday morning, saying he hopes to allow them to be back in business as soon as possible.

“We also recognize your sector is multifaceted and we don’t want to be naive and just put out something that’s bland and that doesn’t meet your unique criteria and your unique considerations,” Newsom said.

The news comes as Dr.

Gym that opened during lockdown closes after getting 4 citations in 2 days

A Pennsylvania gym that reopened during the state’s stay-at-home order closed again after receiving four citations.

10X Fitness, in Lackawanna County, reopened on Monday. The gym had been shuttered since Gov. Tom Wolf ordered nonessential businesses to close their doors on March 19 to limit the spread of the coronavirus.

But Tuesday night, the gym posted on Facebook that it had decided to once again close.

“Unfortunately, due to citations, we will have to close our doors once again until further notice,” the post said. “In preparing to take this unprecedented stand, we did expect these consequences.”

The gym received four citations — two on Monday and on
