Shaun Weiss’ dentist, Dr. Gabe Rosenthal, opens up about treatment

The dentist behind Shaun Weiss’ brand-new smile is opening up about the “Mighty Ducks” actor’s total transformation.

LA-based Dr. Gabe Rosenthal offered his dental services free of charge when he heard of 42-year-old Weiss’ struggles through a friend, former “Salute Your Shorts” star Michael Ray Bower (“Donkeylips”), and after having read the news about Weiss’ arrest.

“He’s just a great guy,” Dr. Gabe told Page Six of Weiss over the phone Thursday. “We mesh really well.”

Dr. Gabe began his treatments with Weiss, who played Goldberg in the Disney movies, earlier this summer, but his journey isn’t over, in terms of both his dental work and his physical health.

“He’s such a good guy, such a sweetheart. He’s putting his weight back on. He is so much more confident,” Dr. Gabe shared of Weiss’ recovery from drug addiction. “He’s ready to go. He feels better. Every time I see him

Precision Medicine in Cancer Treatment

Precision medicine is an approach to patient care that allows doctors to select treatments that are most likely to help patients based on a genetic understanding of their disease. This may also be called personalized medicine. The idea of precision medicine is not new, but recent advances in science and technology have helped speed up the pace of this area of research.

Today, when you are diagnosed with cancer, you usually receive the same treatment as others who have same type and stage of cancer. Even so, different people may respond differently, and, until recently, doctors didn’t know why. After decades of research, scientists now understand that patients’ tumors have genetic changes that cause cancer to grow and spread. They have also learned that the changes that occur in one person’s cancer may not occur in others who have the same type of cancer. And, the same cancer-causing changes may … Read More

Popular heartburn medicine being studied as treatment for coronavirus

Over the past few weeks researchers have been discreetly studying a new potential treatment for COVID-19 — and it might not be what you expect.

The treatment in question is called famotidine, and it’s the active ingredient in Pepcid, an over-the-counter medication commonly used to alleviate heartburn.

Since March 13, researchers at Northwell Health, a network of hospitals in New York, have been enrolling patients hospitalized with COVID-19 into their study of famotidine, which is being delivered through an IV in megadoses nine times greater than the typical over-the-counter dose. The drug is being given in combination with the much-touted antimalarial hydroxychloroquine.

Researchers said some data on safety will be available “in a few weeks,” but did not say when data will be available showing whether the drug combination is effective.

Dr. Kevin Tracey, CEO and president of the Feinsteins Institute for Medical Research at Northwell Health, says the study

Bellingham dentist offering coronavirus test before treatment

Until he could test his patients for COVID-19, a Bellingham periodontist said he had to use a hammer and chisel to remove teeth if they broke during an extraction.

That’s what David Baker said he did for three weeks during emergency dental procedures at the Implant and Periodontal Clinic.

“It’s quite unpleasant,” said Baker, whose surgical practice focuses on dental implants, extractions and gum disease.

That’s because using a drill, which sends small droplets into the air from patients, was putting Baker and the clinic’s dental staff at risk because of the COVID-19 pandemic, he said.

But he’s been able to resume using a drill since being able to offer COVID-19 testing to his patients, starting last Wednesday, April 8. Testing is allowing him to provide safety for his staff as well as patients — and he’s expecting testing to remain part of the future if dentists are going
