Upon completion of the projects, students receive a scholarship and community service hours needed for graduation. During the two-week summer component, students explore the Pajaro River Watershed, meet with local scientists and participate in inquiry-based learning. Conclusions This project may serve as a template for other formal and informal educators to develop these types of collaborations, using informal science education as a bridge to link science researchers and middle- and high-school students in creating an environment where students learn through actively participating in the public communication of science.
